Course Description
The goal of this course is to support students become effective readers and writers so that they are able to read and write confidently in all subject areas.
Throughout the course, students will continue to develop their research skills by drawing evidence from different texts that support their own thinking. To develop their speaking and listening skills students will learn to ask good questions that lead to group discussion and to modify their own views in accordance with new information and ideas expressed by those around them.
Each unit will be supported with a culminating project that is aligned to 8th grade Common Core Standards.

Novels
Unit 1
Students will examine the focus question (What Does It Mean to Be American?) and create their own answer by choosing an art or written project. Students can choose creating a work of art, doing a photo essay, performance piece, writing an essay, writing a song, etc to answer what the question means to them.

unit 2
After learning their own racial bias and doing work of becoming ant-racist, in groups, students will create Zoom panels/sessions in which they will share what they have learned with 6th& 7thgrade classes. Students will also teach how to become anti-racist.

unit 3
Students will write a short story based on a theme that is pulled out of a hat. Students can choose to challenge themselves to write their story based on their theme.
